Arusha Campus News – 31 May 2019

Arusha Campus Newsletter 31st May 2019

Dear Parents

Well the wait is almost over …..not only until our metamorphosis into Africa’s second UWC (see new billboard design above)……..but also as we put the finishing touches to the preparations for the International Festival later today. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Anoek van der Vinne and Nathalie Harrison for their immense work in putting this event together. Its a thankless task as not everyone – including the Head of Campus – is as co-operative as they could be! These fine ladies have been ably assisted by two more in Carley Mchome and Monika Dunstan who have worked tirelessly in the wings. The rest of the PTA too should get a mention led by Chair Guustaaf, Michel, Jodi, Mark, Darren and Ruth, as they are a fabulous team who will do everything to help improve our school. Thanks all I hope you get to enjoy the Festival
as much as everyone else this afternoon!

Regards

Phil

From the Primary and Secondary Schools

Dear Parents,

This week our M5 students have been off-campus taking part in their work experience week. We have had students working at vets, restaurants (see Tony practicing his silver service), mechanics, salons and many more varied places. They have been excellent ambassadors for themselves and for ISM.

Juma preparations continue to be in full swing, with class practice of songs and full rehearsals. On Monday 10 June we will be having a full dress rehearsal with students from Braeburn, Christchurch and St Constantine’s. The full performance will take place on Tuesday 11 June, starting at 13.30. CCAs for PYP on will be cancelled on this day.

On Monday ISM Arusha will host the third annual careers and skills symposium. Thanks to all our community members who have volunteered to share their experiences of work and their professions.

Next week will also mark the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr. This will provisionally mean school with be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Once the date is confirmed we will let everyone know the finalised closure dates.

I wish you all a fantastic International Festival and a great weekend.

Darren

M3 IDU Trip – Tumaini University’s Cultural Arts Center

Last week from 22-24 May, the combined M3 from Arusha and Moshi campus traveled to Tumaini University’s Cultural Arts Center for the Interdisciplinary Trip combining Arts and Kiswahili.

Under the themes of “Kilimo ni Uti wa Mgongo” and “Sanaa na Mazingira Yake” students participated in Performing and Visual Arts workshops conducted in a mixture of Kiswahili and English. The workshops included drumming/drum-making, dancing/drama, and drama/props-making, all to be included in the final, summative performance given by students and CAC staff. All students learned how to tie and dye their own clothes.

Our very own Neel “Lightman” and Aryan “Soundman” were able to learn how to produce lighting effects and control sound for a large venue. Along with the students’ own development with Arts and Language skills, they were able to see a wide array of performances on Tanzanian instruments from different regions as well as watch a professional performance of Music, Dance, and Drama presented by CAC staff, all focused on specific traditions across the entire nation.

The student performance was a great success enjoyed both by audience members and the students themselves. It is sure to be a memorable trip for all! Thank you to Mwalimu Gift Tyea for accompanying and to the Moshi staff for their help.
