Arusha Campus Newsletter 8th June 2019

The wonderful M5 Class of 2019 on the day that they finished M5!

Dear Parents

What a lovely week we have had. Today’s M5 Leaving Ceremony drew complementary praise from everyone who attended. The students looked resplendent in their beautiful dresses and suits, Mr Olivier made us laugh and we were honoured to have Dr Derek Blackman present to hand out our certificates. A former Director General of the IB, Derek’s principal interests recently have been in United World Colleges (UWCs), in which he was a member of the International Board, serving as Vice Chair from 2004-2012. He remains in governance roles in the UWC colleges in Germany, Italy and Swaziland.

Last weekend our International Festival proved to be one of the best ever. This newsletter is punctuated with Darren’s spectacular photos  of the day.  Special thanks must go to our fabulous Arusha PTA for organising this event. They are busy helping out again this weekend with a Car Boot Sale which starts from 10am later this Saturday morning.

Have a wonderful weekend

From the Primary and Secondary Schools

As we approach the end of the academic year we look back at the amazing achievements of our students. This was embodied in the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the MYP by our M5 students; thirteen individuals who have all made their mark on ISM in very different, but all positive, ways. We wish them all well in the next stage of their educational journeys, whether as part of the first D1 class of UWC, or elsewhere.

On Friday we also had a group of PYP students travel to Kennedy House to take part in the spelling bee. Well done to all for their efforts and for Miss Shaheen for guiding them on their spelling ways. Eleanor is pictured left receiving her winners certificate in her age group from The Kennedy House Headteacher.

At the beginning of the week our M5 students were busy with their Careers & Skills Symposium on Monday, with seven visitors from varied professions and areas of work sharing their knowledge and stories; many thanks to all those who volunteered their time. On Tuesday the M5s hosted a service day at ISM Arusha for children from the House of Children Foundation. Our students organised games, learning activities and a general day of fun, which was greatly enjoyed by all.

Next week the PYP students will be putting on their grand performance of ‘Juma and Friends’; with a dress rehearsal on Monday morning and then the main event on Tuesday at 13.30. Make sure you do not miss the fun!

Have a great weekend,

Darren

Young Aurora

Open to all UWC schools and colleges, and presented by the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative in partnership with UWC International, the Aurora Humanitarian Project for UWC Schools and Colleges (“Young Aurora”) aims to encourage UWC students to engage in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and practical manner with current humanitarian issues affecting a community. Young Aurora recognises student projects designed to have meaningful impact – and provides one winning team each year with a financial grant to further the development of their project.

This week two groups of young people, one from each campus, presented their ideas for the Aurora Project to a selection panel. This panel was tasked to select one team to represent ISM in the next stage of the competition. The team that was eventually selected to represent ISM in the Young Aurora Project 2019 was a team from Moshi Campus, whose initiative on developing Smokeless Kitchens looks very exciting indeed. Congratulations to them and also to the Arusha team who should not be discouraged in developing their idea about orphan education further – we’ll need another entry next year!

Fabric painting CCA

The Fabric Painting CCA created cushion covers and bags this quarter to show off their talents.

Under 9 and Under 11 Netball

Griffyn and Siri combine to unlock the Kennedy House defence as they romp to the NTAA title

The junior netball teams continued their impressive form this week. The U11 won all their games at a tournament yet again and maintained their unbeaten record this season. They have won every single game that they have played. As a result they were confirmed as NTAA netball champions this year. The Under 9 team also played superbly but were just unable to repeat the victory of two weeks ago. They drew 2 but unfortunately lost 3. Well done everyone. A special thanks to Coach Caroline and Coach Hala.

UWC Short-Course

ISM is excited to host the second edition of the Umoja UWC short course in Tanzania. The course will bring together 24 young individuals from all around the world under the theme “Coming Together to Build Community”.
