As you will notice from this newsletter, the activities at our school are coming thick and fast now and there is barely time to breathe before getting ready for the next event! Some of our number are away this weekend at Moshi Campus for the 24hr Run whilst others are busy preparing the course for next week’s Rotary Triathlon here on Arusha Campus.

If you haven’t entered yourself or your triathlon team yet, please do so on Monday. The event is always fully subscribed and due to the limitations of getting swimmers through our school swimming pool, every year I have to turn away many disappointed late applicants. So, please sign up as soon as you can. You can email me on or on to reserve your entry but HURRY as places are very limited.

PYP News

Primary parents please come along to the PYP Parent Workshop on Friday 13th September from 8.00-8.30am in the Primary Art Room to find out more about the PYP and Inquiry.

There will be time for questions, lots of activities and coffee!


P5 Trip to Legendary Lodge

A big thank you to Michelle Hastings for organising a fabulous trip to Legendary Lodge for the P5 class as part of their unit on tourism. The students were greeted with face towels and hot chocolate followed by a tour of the beautiful lodge. Finally ending up at Meru Cottage for questions and snacks. The up-cycled gun room and a bathroom bigger than our own bedrooms were a few of the highlights. A special thanks to Legendary Lodge for a memorable trip.

M1 students’ visit to IRMCT Arusha

On Friday, M1 students visited the United Nations Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) to learn more about the tribunal, experienced a walk-through within the state-of–the-art building and its equipment and how this setting supports various instances within and beyond the tribunal to effectively communicate in order to understand each other. We were given a tour of the IRMCT Library and the Digital Archive. This trip is organized as part of French and Design interdisciplinary unit. 

The main focus was to learn about how the communication among the parties in the courtroom chambers, the interpreters’ booths and the audio-visual unit is conducted. Our very excited M1 students had the opportunity to be informed by the AV technician, Mr. Guido on how the court’s digital AV systems operate (by managing various means of communication in different languages and live streaming). In addition, the students had the chance to play and see how the equipment works; a mini mock trial was exercised where students acted as judges, defendants, lawyers, etc. They also did conversational activities in French language with Ms. Coralie.

Outdoor Pursuits Latest

The Outdoor Pursuits programme at UWC East Africa provides students with opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation, leadership development and experiential learning. Currently the OP programme consists of a hiking, mountain-biking and a new water-based programme intended to allow students to progress progressively through challenging levels, starting with Level 1 trips introducing basic outdoors skills and followed up by trips of increasing difficulty levels such as Level 5 – a six day trek to summit Mt Kilimanjaro.

OP: Campcraft

On the OP trip, Campcraft which we went on last week, we learned the basics of camping, but personally we already knew what to do so it was quite easy. The hike and the waterfall was very pretty and you could take lots of nice photos like the one above. It was a great experience for communicating with the other campus. Considering that we knew what to do, the rest of the trip was brilliant.

New development: OP water-based programme!

This year we are expanding the OP programme by adding water-based activities. The first OP Water trip will take place at the coast in Tanga at Fish Eagle Point campsite. Students will be involved in various water-based activities including sailing, sea-kayaking, snorkeling, open water swimming as well as land activities such as a mangrove walk.

The OP Water program will be developed in three stages: the 1st stage will build students’ confidence in open waters through participation in water-based activities; the second stage will focus on developing specific and more technical skills (i.e. scuba-diving and PADI courses). The 3rd stage will be linked to marine conservation whereby students will use their skills towards a service learning project (protecting coral reef, plant/transplant mangroves…)

Signing-up for an OP trip

Above is an overview of the OP trips for Semester 1, prices are in TZ Shilling.

OP information with cost and dates has been emailed to students and posted on ManageBac. It will also be presented to students during mentor time throughout next week as well as posted on the OP notice board at school.
Sign-ups for OP trips will be done online through Sign-Up Genius. Students will receive an email on Saturday 7 September at 6 pm in order to sign-up. To secure their spot, parents should complete payment directly at the accounts’ department. As there are limited places, priority will be given to students who finalize payment first.
For the Kilimanjaro trip, a deposit of 25 % of the total cost should be made by September 13 and the remaining balance should be paid by the end of Quarter 1.
Our trip costs are made up of transport and food costs ; teachers, guides and porters costs, WMA or National Park fees. Please note that the Tanzanian government is applying the VAT tax on tourism activities and this tax is affecting the cost of our OP trips. The differing prices for Tanzanian and expatriate students reflect differing charges from the National Parks.
The OP programme is optional but we encourage students to take this opportunity to experience the wonderful environment here in Tanzania.

Wilderness First Aid training course

Last weekend, many of our teachers completed a 3 day Wilderness First Aid training course. This is a requirement for teachers leading OP trips. It ensure that teachers have the required skills to provide first aid to students while on OP trips in remote outdoor areas. All teachers involved in OP trips are now certified (or recertificed) in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. We are also planning to organise a one day Basic First Aid course for interested secondary students.

8am 18th September – AGM of the Arusha Campus PTA

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Arusha Campus PTA is a meeting at which the new PTA Executive Committee is elected. Nominations for candidates for the committee can be received by Phil or Caroline or handed to any current PTA member.

Boot Appeal!

Some our new boarding students require football boots and shorts for the upcoming season. If you have any going spare, we would really appreciate them. All sizes and conditions are welcome. Please donate to Caroline at the main reception.

Piano Lessons

My name is Gabriel Kalamata with many years of experience of teaching music theory/piano. I follow the ABRSM (The Exam Board of Royal School of Music Curriculum from the UK whereby students  can learn music theory and practical of piano lessons from grade 1-8.

Piano students can take part in ABRSM exams once a year. This is not compulsory. Here are few spaces currently available for piano lessons.
