Arusha Campus News – 16 Aug 2026

This weekend a group of 16 teachers accompanied our new Diploma 1 cohort of students to the north of Mt Meru where we conducted the Campcraft Outdoor Pursuits trip. Around 180 students took part in hot, dusty but beautiful conditions.

Just two hours ago I was priviliged to close up camp with 180 Diploma 1 students as we brought the curtain down on our D1 Campcraft weekend. The organisation of our Outdoor Pursuits team, the incredible cooking, expert driving from all 8 bus drivers, the enthusiasm of the supervising teachers and the boundless energy and fine spirit shown by all the students made me exceedingly proud to be assoicated with our school.

If you are a parent in Arusha then please join us for coffee and biscuits at our PTA Coffee Morning at 7.45am on Tuesday this week. If you would like to know more about our Host Family programme then you are also welcome to come along to our Host Family Mocktail evening at 4.30pm on Thursday.

Please note that Friday August 21st is a non-school day as that day is devoted to an in-service training day for all our staff on both Arusha and Moshi Campus. Thank you for your understanding.

The Primary school has been buzzing with an air of joy and fun this week! This picture sums up so much of what I love about our school: happy faces, different ages interacting and new students quickly feeling at home. Our values celebrate building ‘a sense of belonging’ and it takes everyone playing their part to make this a reality.

Coming up we have our Parent Class Coffee Mornings. This is a chance to meet some other parents in your child(ren)’s class, hear a bit more about the curriculum, expectations for the year and ask questions. They take place from 8-8.30am in your child’s classroom, except NEC in the Primary Art Room.

Finally, on Tuesday 18th August we have our Primary CCA Fair (Co-Curricular Activities) from 2-2.30pm in the Primary playground.  Here students will be able to hear about all the after school clubs on offer this quarter and try out some of the activities. Parents are most welcome. To sign your child up for a CCA, you will need to log onto life.uwcea.org and go to the CCA tab from 4pm on Tuesday 18th August.

At school, students earn house points in recognition of their positive engagement and contribution to lessons. Whether they are asking thoughtful questions, sharing ideas, taking intellectual risks, communicating with others, or approaching challenges with curiosity, every effort counts.

Just as a plant needs care and attention to grow, our students are encouraged to nurture their own growth as thinkers, inquirers, risk-takers, and communicators. The house-point system celebrates not only achievement, but also the attitudes and behaviours that help students become confident, curious, and active learners.

George Yugi and his delightful family join us from Kenya where he developed his career as an experinced IB Physics teacher. George actually taught in our school a few years ago when his interest in working for UWC was first provoked. That we have had to wait a few years to finally get him makes our welcome to him and his family all the more warm. Karibuni family Yugi!

We are excited to invite you to audition for our upcoming school production of All My Sons by Arthur Miller; a powerful and emotionally charged drama that explores family, responsibility, and the consequences of our choices.

Who can audition:
Open to MYP and DP students.

What to expect:
Scripts will be provided during auditions, but you are also welcome to prepare an excerpt in advance.

We are also looking for a student stage manager who will work closely with the director to help run rehearsals and coordinate backstage during performances. If you are committed, organized, responsible, and interested in leadership behind the scenes, please reach out.

Our first week of classes is already behind us! School officially got underway on Tuesday, and it has been wonderful to see the campus come alive again.

For our D1 students, the week has been all about finding their way around campus, locating classrooms, meeting mentors and teachers, and getting their first taste of their new subjects. There have already been quite a few subject changes as we work to make sure everyone is in the right classes. Our aim is for all D1 students to be settled into their final subject choices by Friday 21 August. The D1 studenst also had their first taste of putting up and down the school tents (see image above)

We were also very happy to welcome our D2 students back to campus after a well-deserved break. There have been lots of happy reunions as students reconnect with friends and teachers and settle back into campus life. D2 students also used the break to make progress on their Extended Essays. Their next draft is due on Monday, 17 August for teacher feedback, with the final Extended Essay due on 2 October.

It has been a busy but positive start to the year, and we are looking forward to all that the new school year will bring. Welcome back, everyone!
