Yesterday was a lovely warm, sunny day here in Arusha and perfect weather for our U19 invitational football tournament. Both girls and boys teams competed and the eventual winners were St Constantine’s (girls) and UWC East Africa Moshi Campus (boys). Arusha Campus were able to secure second place in both competitions. A big thank you to MIss Caitrin and her team for oirganising such a well organised event.

As is the way with U19 tournaments in a physical sport like football, the relationship between the players of different schools can be a little tense and competition can occasionally be over zealous. Yesterday was perfect. Fierce competition on the pitch complemented by sportsmanship and cameraderie throughout. I was phone-less but wished I had captured images of Yuvraj carrying an injured Braeburn player from the field, or of Maddie. Izzy and Sanaa voluteering to play for the opposition team against our own team becuse they were short of players. Really lovely to see and a credit to the Heads of Braeburn, SCIS and Moshi respectively.

Please note that NEXT Saturday (Saturday 25th September) we will be hosting the Tanzanian Masters Swimming Gala at Arusha Campus. Come along to watch some great swimming but please note that the pool will be closed for parent swimmers on that day. Thanks for your understanding.

CIS/MSA Re-accreditation: Preliminary Visit
As we begin our new five-year re-accreditation cycle, we are pleased to welcome representatives from the Council of International Schools (CIS) – Mr Steve Kotanen – and the Middle States Association (MSA) – Mr Rick Spradling – to campus on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September for our Preliminary Visit.

Accreditation provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our school as a whole: to celebrate our strengths, consider how effectively we are meeting the needs of our students and community, and identify priorities for continued development and improvement.

During their visit, the CIS and MSA representatives will be around campus, visiting lessons and observing teaching and learning, as well as talking with different groups of students, teachers, board members and non-teaching staff. They will also have the opportunity to hear from parents about their experiences and perspectives as members of our school community.

We will therefore be contacting a selection of parents, including members of the PTA and other parent representatives, to invite them to meet with the visiting team. We very much value the contribution of our whole community to this process and look forward to welcoming our visitors and beginning this important five-year journey together.

The football fields were buzzing on Friday afternoon for the Primary inter house football tournament. There were lots of very close matches, but the overall winners were MERU! Well done! Inter house sports tournaments allow everyone to get involved, build teamwork skills and enjoy some healthy competition.

Congratulations to the students who went to the athletics warm up tournament and represented UWC Rhinos this week. Pictured below is Leia, leaping with the most perfect technique, in the long jump.

Students from both Moshi and Arusha Campus congregated in Moshi this Weekend to undertake the first round of the Maths Olympiad competition. See image above.

Math Olympiad contests are now worldwide and aim to foster an interest in mathematucs and improve the mathematical skills of participants through team-based competitions. They exist for students in MYP and DP. High school students from more than 100 countries compete annually.

Founded in 1977, the Math Olympiads program centres on contests in which teams of students compete remotely. Each School has a team leader who in our case is Mr Jeremiah. Depending on their performance in each contest, students and teams are rewarded with certificates, plaques or trophies.

Everyone has a story worth sharing, and the Human Library aims to give the UWCEA community a way to share those stories!
The Human Library is an initiative platform where anyone can give a 10 minute talk about something they’re interested in and are excited to share! On Thursdays, a 10-minute presentation or talk will be held in the canteen at 12:40-1:00 PM. It is an opportunity to express your ideas, thoughts, stories, or anything that you are passionate about. The Human Librarians will offer any assistance needed, whether it’s setting up speakers or joining the talk with the speakers.

We do something similar with ideas and beliefs. Sometimes new evidence changes our minds. Sometimes a different perspective does. Sometimes someone we trust changes our minds for us. And sometimes, even when the evidence changes, we don’t change our minds.
