Dear Parents

Dana (M5) and Liya (M4) address the children at Mringa Primary School in Ngaramtoni earlier this week.

Our Service programmes led by Miss Hilary and Mr Gift are in full swing now and we have buses going out to local schools and humanitarian centres every week as our students and staff immerse themselves in meaningful community service. In this week’s newsletter I have shared a few photos from the activities that have taken place in the past week.

Service is a major and indeed compulsory component of our programmes and all of us strive to offer meaningful service as opposed to succumbing to the temptation to pay lip service to the notion of service in order to make it look as though we have accomplished something when we haven’t!

Meaningful service is real, helpful action that solves problems, while paying lip service means saying nice words about helping without actually doing the work. We all like to be ‘noticed’ when we help others, that is human nature, but we talk a lot in school about being selfless and realising that the impact of the service activity is what we are there for and not necessarily the recognition.

The students in the pictures above and below are certainly succeeding in making an impact and are enjoying their work while they do it. Perfect.

Have a super week ahead – please note that the Tanzanian Nationals Swimming Tournament is coming to our campus at the end of the week and so the ‘pool will not be accessible for community members on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Thanks for your understanding.

Phil

This weekend we hosted volleyball, netball and ultimate frisbee! Here is the volleyball tournament in full flow managed by Mr Kevin

Our U16s took on our U19s at Ultimate Frisbee

Our U19 netballers were weary after a long day of matches but still managed a jump for the camera!

From the PYP

The Quarter 1 Primary Student Council ready for action!

Meet the quarter 1 Primary Student Council! This week the P1-6 classes each chose a student representative and on Friday we revealed the new Student Council.  They will meet with me on a regular basis to discuss ideas for school, share feedback and plan fun events… watch this space! We actively encourage student agency and intentionally plan opportunities for students to have ‘voice, choice and ownership’ over their learning and school experience. If your child has an idea for school, encourage them to chat to one of these Student Council members.

Thank you.

Miss Adele, Head of PYP

Reading is so important!

This week, the children in P3 (pictured above) read the Aesop’s fable Town Mouse and Country Mouse, which connected to our Unit of Inquiry on communities. During our language lesson, the children took part in a lively debate where they had to convince the teachers whether they should come and live in the town or the countryside. The children worked in groups, shared ideas, gave reasons to support their opinions, and listened to different perspectives. We had some wonderful brainstorming, teamwork and discussions.

Service in action at the Walk in Love Centre in Kisongo

Afsona (below)  and Mariamawit (above) made the short journey to Walk In Love Centre in Kisongo to read stories to the children there.

Walk In Love https://www.walkinloveinternational.org work with families and communities to give every child under five in Tanzania the opportunity to reach their full potential, focusing on the first thousand days of life. One child at a time, one family at a time they can support Tanzanians as they increase their productive potential.

Walk In Love believe every child in Tanzania should have an equitable chance to survive and thrive in a nurturing family environment.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Corner

Can we be wrong and not know it?

Last week, we asked: Can experience make us knowledgeable?
This week, let’s put our own experience to the test.

Watch this Å koda commercial. Pay attention to what you see.

The new Å KODA Fabia Attention Test 1
What did you notice? What did you miss?
Sometimes we can be completely convinced that we saw something correctly — and still be wrong.

Our attention, expectations, memories and perspectives can all influence what we think we know. Can we be wrong and not know it? Can you think of another example?

Arusha’s Got Talent 2026!

Calling all secondary school performers, entertainers, and talent enthusiasts! 🌟

Get ready for Arusha’s Got Talent, the most exciting, fun-filled, and entertaining night of the year! Whether you’re a singer, dancer, comedian, magician, musician, or performer of any kind, this is your chance to shine on stage and showcase your talent in a non-competitive event environment.

Shoe Some Love!

We are excited to announce a campus-wide shoe collection drive in support of Kafika House (formerly The Plaster House). Kafika House is a wonderful Arusha-based organization that provides pre- and post-operative surgical care and intensive rehabilitation for children treating conditions like clubfoot, fluorosis, and burn scar contractures.

As these children undergo physical therapy and take their first steps toward recovery, having the right footwear is essential. We are asking our community to donate new or gently used children’s footwear.

How You Can Help:
From Sept 1 to Sept 15, you can drop off donations in the collection bins located at Primary Year 5 (Teacher Sean’s class) at UWCEA Arusha.

Guidelines for Donations:

Sizes: Baby, toddler, and pediatric sizes (Ages 0–18)

Types: Sneakers, running shoes, or sturdy sandals.
Fastening: Velcro, elastic laces, or slip-on styles, laces
Condition: Clean, intact soles, and free of holes. Please tie pairs together.

Thank you for your generosity and for helping us make a tangible, local impact on the lives of these children.
