Dear Parents

I love this picture! Ella (Early Childhood) was our youngest triathlete this year on bike number 166!

Some weary legs in school this week from all the children and parents and teachers who took part in the weekend’s triathlon. The event is designed to bring the community together and swim, cycle and run together. The secondary objective is as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Arusha West Side. I am pleased to say that the fundraising was a success and the Club will now be in a position to receive applications from local humanitarian projects and spend that money on the wider local community.

Service to the community that we live in is a priority for boith UWC and Rotary. This week I was in conversation with the Headteacher of Magereza School across the road from our campus. SHe is a friend of mine and her concern was for one of her low lying classrooms. Her school is prone to flooding in heavy rain and she wanted to renovate a classroom on higher ground in case the impending rainy season brought more floods. Our maintenance team were anxious to help and that classroom has now been renovated in good time.

All that remains is to thank everyone involved for helping out on the day – including all families who participated.

Thanks

Phil

Appeal for help for Emergency/Holiday Roster

Dear UWC East Africa Arusha Campus Community,

This week we have a graduated student returning from Uganda to stay in Tanzania for a period of two months before he can then secure a visa to travel to his new university in USA. We are looking for somewhere that he can stay for at least some of that time.

To that end, we are sending this again which is a gentle reminder that the PTA is inviting families to register their interest in our  Emergency/Holiday Roster, a pilot initiative to help ensure that boarding students who are unable to return home during school holidays have access to a safe and welcoming place to stay.

Whether you can host a student for a short or extended period, offer emergency accommodation, or provide a house-sitting or pet-sitting opportunity, your support would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the registration form here:

https://forms.gle/8uwC841yySw3A5fC8

Registering does not commit you to hosting; any arrangements would be discussed and agreed upon with the relevant parties if a need arises.Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Head of Residential Life who is Sarah at sarahmaingi@uwcea.org.

Thank you for helping us strengthen our community and ensure that no student is left without a safe and welcoming place to stay during school closures.

Kind regards,

The UWC East Africa Arusha PTA

From the PYP

Pictured above are the talent show participants from our recent Talent Show!

The Primary student council planned a wonderful Talent Show to see out quarter 1. I was bowled over by the number of students who jumped at the chance to participate and displayed their creative skills from gymnastics to singing, dancing to telling jokes. Fostering confidence and a love of the stage is something we actively pursue through encouraging students to regularly present their learning both in class, with Buddies and during Share Times.

It was also a joy to see many Primary families spend time together at the recent PYP Pool Picnic. Following positive feedback, we hope to do this every quarter. Attached is the pool timetable, if you are a UWC family and you’d like to use the pool at weekends, you can collect the community key from the gate askaris and use the facilities. Please note the pool changing rooms are usually locked but the field ones are open.

P5 – Solar Baked Chocolate Cookies!

Bella in P5 proudly shows off her solar cookie oven!

What do you get when you combine a scorchingly hot afternoon with a handful of future scientists? Perfectly melted, solar-baked chocolate cookies! Students had a wonderfully warm week of inquiry and hands-on discovery in P5! As part of our Unit of Inquiry on “How the World Works,” our students have been exploring the power of natural energy through wind, water, geothermal and solar forces. The highlight of our week was our solar ovens project, where the class stepped into the shoes of technicians to design and build working pizza-box solar ovens to melt chocolate onto biscuits! By applying physics principles of reflection, heat absorption, and insulation, students captured radiant sunlight and transformed it directly into thermal heat energy. We are so proud of their enthusiasm for clean energy solutions as many students wanted to take these home and use them to heat up their dinner or maybe just some marshmallows.

Rotary Interact Charity Chess Tournament

Dear UWCEA Community,

The Rotary Interact Club would like to invite students, teachers, and other members of our school community to take part in a charity chess competition at UWC East Africa on November 14th.

Participants can sign up in either the beginner or intermediate/advanced category. Registration is 15,000 TZS per person.

Half of the registration money will go towards prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category, while the other half will be used to purchase chess sets to be donated to local schools and elderly homes.

The aim is to provide engaging activities for children and encourage mental stimulation and cognitive wellbeing for the elderly, including as part of Alzheimer’s prevention initiatives. UWCEA students will also help teach chess in these communities.

We hope this can be a fun day of chess while giving back to our community!

SIGN UP FORM is accessible at this link https://forms.gle/BXn8yJb9Ca4TJz8d7

Best regards,
Rotary Interact Club

The Human Library

Everyone has a story worth sharing, and the Human Library aims to give the UWCEA community a way to share those stories!
The Human Library is an initiative platform where anyone can give a 10 minute talk about something they’re interested in and are excited to share! On Thursdays, a 10-minute presentation or talk will be held in the canteen at 12:40-1:00 PM. It is an opportunity to express your ideas, thoughts, stories, or anything that you are passionate about. The Human Librarians will offer any assistance needed, whether it’s setting up speakers or joining the talk with the speakers.
Parents, guardians, and anyone with a story are encouraged to sign-up from the QR code in the image above or by simply clicking on the image itself.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Rob  robertairdrie@uwcea.org
