Leading to the Break

This week is our last as we head to the October break. This short newsletter has some information from the last week and for the weeks ahead.

The Week-Without-Walls program for the MYP continued to allow our students to experience different parts of Tanzania and engage with their counterparts from Arusha Campus. From the sounds of things, the experience was both fun and informative. The D1 students had their Project Week which is more self-directed and allowed them explore interests and challenge themselves. Most of our D1 students traveled this week so they too got to see more of Tanzania beyond Moshi.

While we were not going to initially have a newsletter this week there is one important change to the calendar we wanted to let you know early. On Wednesday, October 29, Tanzania will hold its national election. To allow our staff and students time to travel and vote, there will be no classes on that day.

During this break I wish all of you a restful time. Be safe in your travels and we hope to see you for the start of classes on October 20th ready to tackle the 2nd half of the semester.

Bob Cofer – Head of Campus

PYP News

Thank you to everyone who attended the P2/3 Primary Gathering on Friday. The class also contributed to the school community this week by helping with the composting program—well done to all involved. The next Primary Gathering will be after the break on Friday, October 24th. There is a whole school end of quarter assembly on Monday, 6th October at 10:30 in Karibu Hall. Primary parents are welcome to attend but please note that the assembly is more directed to the secondary students.

Students in P4–6 completed their MAP online assessments this week. Results will be shared in the coming weeks and used to guide future learning. The next round of MAP tests will take place at the end of April.

On Tuesday, October 7th, a team of PYP swimmers will travel to Kennedy House for a swim meet. They will leave early (departing at 7:00 a.m. sharp) and return before 5:00 p.m. We wish our swimmers the best of luck and hope they enjoy the day.

On Wednesday, October 8th, we will hold our Goal-Setting Conferences. Parents, students, and teachers will meet to discuss progress so far and set learning goals for the coming quarter. Class teachers have shared a signup link by email—thank you for registering your preferred time.

Clubs have now finished for the quarter. I  will send the signup link for Quarter 2 clubs after the break, but we are still confirming volunteers among parents and Diploma students who would like to lead activities. This is a six-week commitment, and you will be supported by an Education Assistant. Many thanks to everyone who offered their time and energy to support the program this term.

The optional PYP Halloween Celebration will take place on Friday, October 31st, starting at 4:00 p.m. For this event to go ahead, we need 10 volunteers to decorate their cars and organise a game or activity for Trunk or Treat. Please sign up on the board outside Ms. Kacey’s room. We also welcome donations of wrapped candy, which can be dropped off in the boxes located in the front office.

Please note—there will be no classes on Wednesday, October 29th, due to the national election, as mentioned in Mr. Cofer’s message.

Finally, Friday, October 10, is the last day of classes before the break. School will finish at the usual time. On behalf of the Primary team, I wish you and your children an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus on Monday, October 20th.

MYP News

This week, all of our MYP students took part in Week Without Walls, a signature UWC East Africa experience that brings learning to life beyond the classroom. From cultural exchanges to scientific investigations, from creative projects to outdoor challenges, students immersed themselves in experiential learning that builds skills, resilience, and connection to our community and environment.

On Friday, they returned tired but smiling, filled with stories of adventure, growth, and teamwork. These trips are more than just excursions, they are an opportunity for our Moshi and Arusha campuses to learn alongside one another, strengthening the bonds of our wider UWC community.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all our teachers who accompanied the trips, both from Moshi and Arusha, for their tireless energy and dedication. Special appreciation also to all the staff who supported behind the scenes, ensuring our students were safe, engaged, and cared for throughout the week.

Please enjoy the photos collected in this folder. They capture the spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and joy that define Week Without Walls. Here’s to many more meaningful journeys in the years to come!

MYP Dates to Remember

October 10th – Classes End Q1

Have a great week ahead,

The D2 students had a fantastic week in school, catching up on their assignments, university applications and Extended Essays. I know many of them had big goals and, on a whole, the group is feeling positive about how much they achieved. All students met with me to confirm their IB subject registrations, Ms Margaret for CAS check-ins and Ms E for University applications. We are here to support them on this journey which we know can be overwhelming at times.

We also had a range of super fun activities like 7-7 football, volleyball, Mario Kart, a river walk, frisbee and art activities. The students enjoyed having some non-academic options available to them.

The D1 students are returning from their project week activities this weekend too. More information will come on this in the next newsletter but this is a picture from the Conservation visit to Mkomazi National Park.

This is our last week of school before the October break.

UWCEA KCMC CAS Bake Sale raises over TZS 1 million for Darfur famine relief.

In the beginning of this year, two Sudanese UWCEA Moshi Campus alumni Zeinab and Yousra made a passionate appeal for support to our community. In Sudan a civil war is tearing apart already vulnerable communities which are prone to food insecurity and conflict. At the moment, a famine and cholera outbreak is killing thousands of people.

By means of a bake sale thanks to our amazing fellow students, KCMC CAS managed to raise money which got tripled by an anonymous donor. This amount will be donated to Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) in Darfur, Sudan.

Moreover, 26th of September will mark another successful day for the KCMC service group as the first BLOOD DRIVE of this school year took place. From 8:00am until 5:00pm everyone had a chance to come by Rafiki Hall and, in the positive atmosphere of good music, donate their blood, chat with friends afterwards and enjoy a tasty snack. To encourage more people to participate, the KCMC service group additionally organized a Blood Lottery in which winners will collect deadline extension, ‘day-time Gated Pass’ or bags of sweets. Due to the help of the whole Moshi community we were able to reach 87 donations, which is more than September last year! But we are not stopping here – after October Break we invite all the people that could not donate their blood to go with us on a trip to KCMC and save some lives through donation! We are extremely grateful to all the donors, thank you for helping to save lives!

Jane Goodall

Our community is mourning the loss of Dr. Jane Goodall, who passed away this week at the age of 91. A pioneering conservationist, Dr. Goodall began her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees at what is now Gombe National Park. In the 1990s, while in Dar es Salaam, she founded the Roots & Shoots program to inspire young people to care for the planet and all its inhabitants. Dr. Goodall visited UWC several times, most recently in February 2024 and her presence will be deeply missed.
