Welcome

At the start of another new school year this is a quick welcome to everyone. To our returning community members, it will be great to see you around campus again and to our new members, a warm welcome and I hope that you will quickly feel at home.

Our D1 students are in the process of arriving and will be starting orientation with some of our D2 students to learn about UWC, the IB and Moshi. Of course, the main focus will be getting to know each other. For the rest of the school, our residential students will be arriving this weekend, and classes start on Monday the 11th.

I would like to remind everyone that while we try to keep everyone informed on campus through the weekly newsletter, one of the best ways to see what is coming up on campus is through the calendar on our website. This has a general tab for the school as well as a campus specific tab. Each week we will also be sending out the newsletter so that you know what has been happening as well as what is coming soon.

If you need to contact me, please feel free to email me at bobcofer@uwcea.org.

Residential Life

Dear UWCEA Community,

I hope this message finds you rested, restored, and perhaps still holding onto a few great memories from the break, whether that was a quiet pause at home, adventures across borders, or just moments that gave you time to breathe.

As we open the doors to a new academic year, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome back to each of you: students, staff, families, and everyone who makes this community what it is.

There’s something about coming back to the rhythm of the mountain, the laughter in the breezeway, the quiet energy that builds when the dorms start filling, or at the moment, the Kishari house, classrooms start buzzing, and we all begin again.

This year brings with it new faces, new dreams, and new opportunities to grow, as learners, as people, and as a community. For some, this is the final stretch of a transformative journey. For others, it’s the very beginning. And for all of us, it’s a chance to choose, again, who we want to be to each other.

Let’s return with open minds, soft hearts, and the courage to engage fully. Let’s keep asking big questions, showing up for one another, and remembering that belonging isn’t something we find, it’s something we build.

To our students, we’re so glad you’re back. This place isn’t the same without your energy, your curiosity, and yes, even your questionable shenanigans.

To our staff, thank you for the love, time, effort, and intention you bring to your work. What you do matters and is felt throughout the campus and our school life.

To our families, thank you for trusting us, again, with your young people. We don’t take that lightly.

Here’s to a year of joy, challenge, learning, laughter, growth, and the inevitable plot twists that make all the difference.

Welcome home.

Diploma News

We are so looking forward to welcoming the students back on campus this week. The D2 orientation group have been hard at work planning the orientation for our new D1s, which promises to be full of fun. It’s also an opportunity to set the culture for the new school year – as we all look for opportunities to be kind and courageous. UWC is all about challenging oneself, stepping out of one’s comfort zone and trying something new. We know it’s going to be a fantastic school year.

The D2 students probably spent some time over the break working on their Extended Essay. We hope they have looked through their reports and have identified areas that need additional attention. This is a very busy semester for D2 as they work to submit IAs (internal assessments) and many will turn their attention to their University applications. We are welcoming our new University Counsellor, Ms Elizabeth Elger, who will work closely with the students to support their application journey.

The D1 students have selected their initial subject choices which is always exciting for them. We have a waiting list for some subjects and I know that some students are eager for spots to become available for them. There will be changes over the next few weeks as students make changes. Initially, students may change classes provided there is space in the new class but after the first two weeks, they will need to complete a form and have a discussion with the teacher. This is to ensure the student understands what work has been missed. We hope that students can settle into their subject choices before the October break.

There is always a mixture of emotions at the beginning of the school year  — a tangle of excitement, nerves, and the unknown. A new school year invites us to imagine, to grow, to try again. Whether you’re returning as a confident D2 or a curious D1, this is a fresh year –  a new opportunity to be courageous and kind.

See you soon!

MYP News

Hello from the MYP!

PYP News

Welcome back everyone and a special welcome to families who are joining us for the first time. Welcome back to Elisha Jaffer who is rejoining the PYP teaching team as the P6 class teacher. I hope you all had a great break.

You will be sent a copy of your child’s schedule as soon as it is fixed and any important dates will be shared soon. After school clubs won’t start straight away – as soon as we have the options for this quarter’s clubs and the starting date we will share that with you.

Please ensure that your child wears a UWCEA T-shirt to school every day. These are on sale in the development office so please call in this week to purchase some if necessary.

Be sure to send your child with the following items:

  • A small backpack to transport items to and from school
  • A named water bottle
  • A pair of indoor shoes so that we can keep the classrooms clean
  • Shoes that are suitable for running – outdoor activities can take place on any day, not just PE days
  • A healthy mid-morning snack (no junk food please)
  • A named hat for sunny days and PE lessons

We are looking forward to seeing the children and hearing all of their news on their return to school on Monday, 11th August at 7:30am. Classes finish at 1:10pm every day (11:20 for EC) apart from Friday when all classes finish at 12:30pm. The first week back the children should go home when classes finish unless they plan to eat in the school dining hall. Lunch tickets should be purchased from the front office. There will be no afternoon playground supervision until clubs start. PYP children cannot use the school playground after school without their own adult in attendance so please ensure a parent or dada is present if your child wishes to use the playground.

The PYP team is looking forward to a happy and productive year with your children. Please contact me on deborahmills@uwcea.org or email your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Please see below for information from individual class teachers.

Mboka Mwasongwe EC/P1

The holidays are almost over and I cannot wait to share memories with my students. I have spoken to some over the break and I’m excited to learn about their adventures.

The first week is always one of adjustments to new routines, surroundings and relationships. It can be daunting but I hope with lots of fun activities, we will have a smooth back to school transition.

Kacey Buckley P2/3

P 2/3 is the place to be! We’re looking forward to a wonderful school year. Our kickoff unit about Heroes is a terrific way to start. I hope your family has enjoyed a fantastic break. Ours was busy with time in the States with family, friends and lots of good books.

Deborah Mills P4/5

I hope everyone has enjoyed a relaxing break with family and friends. Please feel free to email a photo of you having fun over the holiday or to bring in a printed version to share. We will spend the first week sharing news, getting to know each other and learning classroom routines. Many of the children were with me last year and others are new to my class so we will focus on building a sense of community.

Elisha Jaffer P6

From the lake to the mountains!  “Summer” (and a very relaxed year off) has come to an end which means it’s back to school! I am so excited to be back in Moshi and taking on a new challenge, we’re going to make it a great year! I look forward to seeing the you and the students in the next couple of weeks.

Ps- if you can’t find me, I’ll probably be at Ms Kacey’s desk having completely forgotten what classroom I am now in!  See you soon!
