Dear Parents

As you can see the focus of this week’s newsletter is the 6 Hour Run. We are starting this event on Arusha Campus and it is hoped that it will develop into an annual event. The idea is to create an annual athletic challenge for individuals and teams to attempt to see how far we can run in 6 hours! The prime objective is fun and that’s why the centrepiece of the event will be funfair stalls and games for younger students as well food and drinks for everyone. A mini football and volleyball tournament will take place concurrently and hopefully it becomes an occasion for the whole UWC East Africa community to look forward to.

To that end please come along on Saturday morning and join in the fun! The run will start at 6.30am but of course you may join in at any time. The football, volleyball and games will start from 9am. Details of fixtures will be sent to those football/volleyball teams that have signed up.

Please sign up in advance of the even as there is no guarantee we can allocate teams or race numbers on the day!

6.30am – Start of 6 Hour Run

9am – Start of Football, volleyball and fun games

BBQ Lunch (for those signed up) from 12 midday

See you there!

MYP Round-up

Our school community is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to nurturing a strong sense of belonging where every student feels valued and connected. By creating meaningful opportunities for students to build relationships, collaborate and share positive experiences, we foster an environment where everyone can learn, grow and have fun together.
This week, two wonderful events truly brought our community spirit to life.

On Wednesday, our MYP students took part in the inter-house swimming competition. Students competed in both competitive races and fun events, showing determination and great house spirit. It was special to see our Tanzanian record holder, Nicolene, in action, as well as students who may not feel as confident in the water but still stepped up to contribute points for their house. Congratulations to Team Meru on their win. See image below

On Thursday, our MYP students visited PYP classes to celebrate the 100th day of school. Together, students engaged in a variety of fun and inclusive activities that were enjoyed by all, younger and older students alike. It was a fantastic opportunity for students across grade levels to connect, collaborate, and spend meaningful time together.

Please join us for the M5 Personal Project Exhibition on Wednesday 25 February from 5-6.30pm! That’s tonight!

Outdoor Pursuits: Peaks Adventure Ngorongoro

Last weekend one of our blue riband outdoor pursuits took place with a large group of students from Arusha and Moshi. The four day trek took the intrepid participants to the summit of Tanzania’s thrid highest point at Loolmalasin and down to the hotbed of Lake Natron. More details to follow next week but I am pleased to report the safe return of our Chair of the Board, Tine and our Director, Anna. Anna and Tine successfully completed the trip and the picture above even shows them smiling in the wilderness!

DP Corner

A beautiful view of our Arusha Campus which was taken last weekend (above)

As we move into the second half of the quarter, it is hard to believe just how much has already been accomplished in such a short time. It has certainly been a rollercoaster start for our DP students!
Our D2 cohort has been navigating one of the busiest periods of the programme. In the past few weeks alone they have completed mock examinations, submitted final Internal Assessments, wrapped up course content, and balanced big decisions for what they want to do next year. It is an intense season, but the finish line is now in sight. With only the last half of Q3 and two weeks remaining in Q4, graduation preparations are well underway, bringing a mix of excitement, pride, and a touch of nostalgia as we realise how close this milestone is.

Meanwhile, our D1 students are beginning to feel the pace quicken as they delve deeper into their subjects and start tackling major components such as their Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay. A highlight of the quarter was the Biology and ESS field trip to the slopes of Mount Meru, where students traded classrooms for forest and practised real data collection in a spectacular setting. Experiences like these remind us how powerful learning beyond the classroom can be.

This quarter has also brought moments of reflection for our whole community. We were grateful to come together for a memorial to honour Catalina. The words shared by her friends and teachers were deeply moving, and the compassion shown by our students for one another was truly inspiring. In difficult times, the strength, empathy, and unity of this community remind us why it is such a special place to learn and grow.

As we look ahead to the final weeks of the quarter, we encourage all students to continue seeking support, staying connected, and looking out for one another. There is still much to achieve, but also many small moments to appreciate — the friendships, the achievements, and the unique experiences that make our school community so vibrant.
