Happy New Year

Happy New Year and I hope that your break has been a wonderful one full of good cheer, rest and time spent with family and friends.

As we head into the second semester I would like to welcome back all of our returning families and welcome the new students and families to Moshi Campus. We look forward to seeing all of you at the start of classes on the 13th. In addition to new students and families we have a new teacher joining us. Mr Nathaniel Plass will be joining us to work with English at the MYP and Diploma levels.

For residential students, you should have communicated with Mr Adnan concerning your arrival details.

Like always, we hit the ground running, with events at all levels of the school in the weeks to come. I suggest regularly checking the school calendar to keep up with all events on campus.

Bob Cofer – Head of Campus

Residential Life

Dear UWCEA Community,

Happy New Year and welcome back!
I hope the break gave everyone a chance to rest, recharge, and reconnect with the people and places that matter most. As we step into a new semester, I’m reminded once again how much our community thrives not just because of what we do, but because of who we are together.

Looking back, the last semester may have been shorter than any of us originally planned, but it certainly wasn’t short on life, learning, or energy. From student-led initiatives and community gatherings to moments of quiet support for one another, our campus stayed vibrant and deeply connected.

A special highlight was watching leadership transition so gracefully as Freja and Mark stepped into their roles as our new Co-Presidents. They’ve already begun bringing thoughtfulness, collaboration, and creativity to the Student Government, and we’re excited to see how they continue shaping student voice this semester. They will welcome us all together on January 20th at the Welcome Back to School Assembly.

We’re also excited to welcome a few new faces to our community! This semester, we’ll have new students joining our MYP program and one residential intern, Oylum, from the University of Duisburg-Essen. She will be with us for the next three months, primarily supporting our MYP students. Please give them a warm welcome when you see them on campus.

There is much ahead: new challenges, new projects, and new opportunities to grow. My hope is that, as we move forward, we continue to hold onto the sense of care and belonging that defines UWCEA. Let’s keep supporting each other, celebrating our differences, and finding joy in the everyday moments that make this place feel like home.

Welcome back! It’s good to have everyone together again.

PYP News

Happy New Year! Here’s hoping 2026 is a happy and successful year for the primary school children. It might seem a long time ago now, but I would like to thank everyone who attended the Morning of the Arts. The children enjoyed themselves so much and it was great to see the singing, drumming, recorder playing and dancing. Well done to Ms. Jamie and Mr. Swai for putting so much work into this show and giving the children the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.

Dr. Marieke is looking for puppets for the secondary KCMC service group to use with the children. If you have any that you are willing to donate, please leave them at the front office.

If you are willing to run a club for the primary children in quarter 3, please email me on deborahmills@uwcea.org. This would be a once a week commitment on the day of your choice 2-3pm. The sign up link for clubs will come out the second week of school (to allow time for interested parents and Diploma students to contact me) and primary clubs will begin the following week.

Our parent–teacher conferences will take place on Thursday, 22 January. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and to ask any questions about the school report issued at the end of last semester. Sign up details will be shared shortly.

The P6 students have a busy quarter ahead of them as they will be working on their PYPX. We wish them lots of success as they begin this adventure. The first week back at school will see them go on their PYPX retreat Wednesday 14th – Thursday 15th January.

We also have some P5 and P6 children (four of each) heading to SCIS to participate in a science day on Friday, 16th January.

The SCIS swim meet (rescheduled from 7th November) will take place on 20th January.

Please read below for a brief summary of what each class will be doing the first week back.

Deborah Mills – Head of PYP

EC/P1 Class

Happy new year to everyone. I hope you and the children have had a relaxing holiday. We cannot wait to hear about all your adventures. Ms. Neema, Ms. Dorcas and I are excited for the coming quarter. We will be exploring minibeasts – insects, spiders, worms and slugs, building our garden to accommodate them and performing in a primary gathering. The picture I shared is a Queen of the Night flower which blooms nocturnally and wilts before dawn. I spent my holiday tending to my garden and was finally rewarded with many blooms. – Ms. Mboka

P2/3 Class

I hope everyone had a terrific break. We are looking forward to wonderful learning in Q3. We will continue on with our study of Rituals, Traditions and Artefacts for a few weeks. Please let me know if you’d be willing to come and speak to that class about your family’s traditions. This unit will culminate with a Class Museum! Details about the event will be sent out soon. The basics of our schedule remain the same in Semester 2: PE on Monday, Swimming on Tuesday, Library books and Home Learning turned in on Friday. – Ms. Kacey

P4/5 Class

Happy 2026. If your child would like to share a photo from the break, please email it to me or send in a paper copy. The first week back we will be writing New Year’s resolutions, making calendars and making maps. Please send the December work packet back to school on the first day so that I can see how far the children got and plan the week’s maths work accordingly. – Ms. Deborah

P6 Class

Happy 2026! You know what comes after 6…? 7! I hope you’ve had a good break and are ready to tackle PYPX! This week the P6 students will be having their PYPX Retreat from Wednesday 14th January to Thursday 15th January. Please send your child to school with the amount due for food and snacks for the overnight adventure. I look forward to seeing you soon. – Ms. Elisha

MYP News

Welcome back to Semester Two!

I hope the long break gave everyone the opportunity to rest, reconnect, and create meaningful memories with family and loved ones. There’s something special about returning after such a pause…our MYP students coming back a little taller, a little more energized, and (hopefully!) refreshed and ready for what lies ahead.

Being home over the break is often a reminder of how grounding familiar places can be. With time, it becomes easier to notice and appreciate the small, meaningful details, not just the big moments, but the everyday ones we sometimes overlook. Whether it’s rediscovering hidden corners of a city, sharing meals that carry stories and traditions, or simply spending time with family and people who matter, these experiences invite us to pause and reflect. I’m sure many of our students felt something similar during the break. returning to places, routines, and connections that reminded them of what truly matters, and perhaps helped them see familiar surroundings with fresh eyes!
Semester Two promises to be full of the experiences we know and value in the MYP, learning, growth, challenge, and reflection. There is much to look forward to, especially for our M5 students, who are now entering the final stretch of their Middle Years journey. As they move closer to this important milestone, we are excited to support them and to see everything unfold in the months ahead.

A quick reminder to families to please ensure that all parent/guardian email addresses are up to date on the Life platform, as this is essential for effective communication. We also encourage everyone to keep track of the dates shared by the school and in this newsletter to support planning for future travel.

Wishing our entire MYP community a very happy New Year. May 2026 bring health, happiness, peace, joy, and love to all.

Diploma News

We have an exciting semester ahead of us with various Diploma field trips planned (particularly in the Sciences) – and our school play! I know the performers will be in full swing next week as they tie up loose ends.

Our D1 students will begin the Extended Essay this quarter. In a world where AI is so easily accessible, a significant focus will be on academic integrity. I encourage parents to discuss topics of interest with their children – year after year our students report that choosing something interesting is the key to success in the EE. We will walk them through the process from choosing a topic, looking for research and structuring their essay.

Our D2 students will take mock exams in February. They received their schedule at the end of last quarter which closely mirrors the final exam schedule. They have lots of other events to look forward to this semester including prom, graduation and their final assembly. A reminder that space is limited at graduation and D2 students will only receive 3 tickets for their family members.

I wish everyone well as you prepare to return to school next week. I have been in sunny South Africa and am feeling refreshed and ready for the next 5 months – this is certainly going to be a busy semester.

MUN @ Moshi Campus

The MUN Conference at the end of November was a fun and educational experience where not only did we learn about the views of our given countries on the topic of debate, but we learned debating skills and how the United Nations solves global issues through debating. The experience wasn’t just about the conference or debating on the topic, it was the fun we had, the friends we made, and the gossip which we had in the ‘gossip box’.  I would recommend doing this to others, whether you like politics or not, engaging in these types of conferences are ways of learning about the world in which you wouldn’t normally, a certainly more fun way.

Outdoor Pursuits

Welcome back! The OP team is excited and raring to go for Semester 2 – we hope your break was filled with adventure, fresh air, and just the right number of muddy boots.

This semester, we’re rolling out 16 more trips across all our programmes. And what better way to kick things off than by heading straight up Mount Meru on January 23rd? Nothing says “welcome back to school” quite like a 4,500m warm-up hike!

As always, please encourage your child to get involved. OP trips are an incredible way to explore Tanzania, make new friends from both campuses, push personal boundaries, and try activities they never knew they enjoyed – remember folks, the view only gets better the higher you walk!

For more information, visit the Outdoor Pursuits section on the school website, where you’ll find our calendar, policies, FAQs, trip catalogues, and packing lists.

Here’s to another great semester of adventure!

Mr Andy
