Dear Parents

I looked out of my window to see what was on my birdtable on Thursday morning and was met with the sight this bunch on a nature walk with Miss Rosemary and Miss Alina.

I make no apology for using the front page of our newsletter to publicise the exploits of Alphonce Simbu, our World Champion athlete from Tanzania. Yes he lives near us here on Arusha Campus  but the main reason is because those that know him speak of humility, care and compassion for the needy and selflessness in the extreme. He would be the exemplary UWC student! If you haven’t seen the last minute of ‘that amazing race’ I urge you to watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED_3d6f-Fxg! It was amazing and our congratulations should go also to Amanal Petros who finished second but did everything to make it a fantastic contest.

Yesterday our Friday Market was back, thanks to our super mums, Nathalie and Maral. Thank you ladies for organising this for our community. The images below do not do justice to the colour and sense of community on show. It was beautiful.

Have a super weekend everyone!

PYP News

Charlie and Uriel enjoy ‘rabbit time’ in the EC playground!

In our NEC playground we are lucky to have rabbits as part of our learning. Caring for rabbits teaches children responsibility, compassion and respect for other living things by fostering empathy and a better understanding of nature. It provides opportunities for bonding and companionship, and teaches children to interact gently. This experience builds important life skills, including commitment, and the ability to understand an animal’s needs.

Learning Dedication:
Children learn that caring for another living creature is a long-term commitment, requiring consistent time and effort, as rabbits can live for many years.

Fostering Compassion:
Handling a rabbit gently helps children understand its needs and boundaries, leading to a deeper respect for the animal and promoting kindness.

Socialization:
The experience helps children learn how to interact with a different type of animal and understand the unique nature of rabbits as intelligent, inquisitive, and social creatures.

Hygiene and Safety:
Children can learn the importance of good hygiene by washing their hands after handling the rabbit.

Stress Reduction:
Simply interacting with a rabbit, watching it play, or cuddling can have a calming effect, reducing stress and promoting happiness for children.

As part of our unit on Francophone celebrations, we explored a well-known French tradition: La Chandeleur (Crêpes Day). After learning how to write recipes, what better way to practice than by making crêpes ourselves? It was a fun and engaging lesson, and Roan and Mink truly impressed us with their special talent for flipping crêpes! (see images above)

From the Residences

Over the past few weeks, our residential students have had the opportunity to take part in several exciting events.

In the last three weeks, Mr. Phil and Miss Amanda warmly welcomed each Boma to their home for a fun-filled barbecue (see image below). A big thank you to the Bowens for time and generosity to host us all.

This Friday also marked our first Boma Night of the year (see images above). Acacia enjoyed a dinner out at a local restaurant, Baobab had a lovely evening at Miss Katy’s, and Jacaranda gathered in the Boma for a fun quiz night featuring baby photos, “Jaca” trivia, and even mystery feet pictures! A heartfelt thank you to our Boarding parents and Boma Leaders for helping make the night so special.

Our weekend activity program continues to be a great success, offering students a chance to unwind and enjoy a wide range of engaging and relaxing activities.
